Threatened Species
Staff have particular expertise in working with
endangered plants and fauna species, and have had a long association
in threatened species recovery advice and research.
In 1999, company director Kerry Oates received
a National Conservation Award for his contribution to blue
duck research in the Central North Island.
Research assistant, Alison Beath, completed
her B.Sc (Hons) thesis on bait trials with short-tailed bats
in Rangataua Forest, Ohakune, prior to joining the company
in 2002.
The company, as one of its long term projects,
has been researching kiwi management in exotic forests, with
an aim of providing forest managers with a management plan
to maintain commercial forest production in unity with kiwi
population enhancement.
Staff have also been involved with threatened
species monitoring on off shore islands, particularly the
Chatham Islands, working on productivity monitoring of species
such as black robin, Chatham’s pigeon, Chatham’s
petrel, and Magenta petrel or Taiko.
Staff have also been involved with threatened
plant monitoring, and design of plant protection measures,
including red mistletoe and pittosporum turnerii.
